Grab your favorite snack for this session! Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) affects more than 1 in 37 American children under the age of 5, making it as or more prevalent than well-known conditions such as Autism and cerebral palsy. As early interventionists, you are often the first line of defense in supporting holistic development and caregiver-child relationships, and may field burning questions about mealtimes like “how much should my child be eating/drinking?”. Because 70-89% of children with developmental delays experience feeding difficulties, you’ve likely experienced PFD, even if you didn’t have a name for it.
This session will share information through a compassionate and relationship-focused lens. We’ll focus on introductory information on Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD), including how feeding is one of the most complex things a body can do and how all body systems work together (or don’t!) to support the feeding experience.
This talk is geared towards all professionals on an Early Intervention team, not just feeding therapists. In this session, you’ll start to develop a detective lens to care for your families when they ask you for mealtime support. And we’re not kidding about grabbing the snack- we’ll use it in this talk!
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, you'll learn
The four domains of PFD and how they all interact and impact one another
The truth regarding the top myths of PFD
How to use a screening tool with your families to identify if the child’s feeding is developmentally appropriate, or if a referral to a feeding therapist is warranted
Who is on a comprehensive feeding team, and how you can help the family advocate for supports both in and outside of mealtimes
How to apply what you’ve learned to think critically through real-life case studies
